The Georg Österreich Collection

Georg Österreich is a little-known musician, as is his collection of vocal music manuscripts — the largest in Europe around 1700 (featuring works from the pre-Bach era).

Born in Magdeburg in 1664, Österreich spent time in Leipzig and Hamburg before being appointed Kapellmeister at the court of Gottorf (Schleswig) in 1689. He spent 12 fruitful years there collecting scores, performing them, and composing his own works.

All the pieces in this programme come from this remarkable collection, which also includes works by Österreich’s two predecessors in Gottorf: Johann Theile and Johann Philipp Förtsch. These have recently been recorded by Musica Gloria and released by Et’cetera Records under the title “Georg Österreich’s Resurrected Treasures.”
